Japanese Plum Yew Tree (Cephalotaxus harringtonii)

Cephalotaxus harringtonii, or Japanese Plum Yew, is a rare evergreen shrub known for its distinctive, fishbone-like foliage and unusual edible fruits.

Named because the foliage resembles that of a Yew tree, its upright stems are covered in linear, spirally arranged leaves that form a V-shaped pattern, giving the plant structure and texture throughout the year.

Female plants produce fruits that resemble tiny plums. The pulp is sweet and edible, while the seeds can be roasted to produce a sweet, nutty snack.

Note: Our young plum yew trees are currently small starter plants, but with the right care and growing conditions they will establish quickly and grow into healthy, productive trees over time.

These plants are Dioecious, meaning a male and female plant is needed for fruit production.

We’re offering a bundle of three plants to give the best chance of fruit as the plants cannot be identified as male or female until mature.

Growing Information

  • Position: Thrives in partial to deep shade, making it ideal for woodland gardens or north-facing borders. It will also tolerate sun in cooler climates if the soil remains moist.
  • Soil: Prefers moist but well-drained soil. Adaptable to most soil types, including slightly acidic or neutral conditions.
  • Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once settled, it is relatively low-maintenance but appreciates consistent moisture in dry spells.
  • Growth Rate: Slow growing. It may take up to 10 years to reach approximately 4–6 feet (1.2–1.8m) in height. With age, plants gradually spread to form a layered shrub.
  • Hardiness: Very hardy and resilient, tolerating both winter cold and summer heat once established.
  • Fruit Production: Plant at least one male alongside female plants to ensure pollination and fruit set.

A superb choice for gardeners seeking something rare, textural and quietly dramatic, the Japanese Plum Yew offers interest in every season, and a unique edible reward for the patient grower.

Perfect for shaded gardens, woodland planting schemes, and collectors of unusual edible ornamentals.

Available in a single plant in a 7cm pot or a group of 3 - the plants are currently 20cm tall inc. the pot
