Nagatani-en beer mugs are fired unglazed on the inside, which gives the beer a lovely foamy head. The unglazed surface contains tiny, microscopic pores that provide nucleation sites for carbon dioxide bubbles.

These bubbles readily attach to these sites, creating a larger, more stable foam head when beer is poured. Additionally, the porous nature of the Iga clay can help insulate the beer, keeping it cooler for longer, which can also contribute to better foam retention.

For better results, soak the mug in water first and then store it in the refrigerator.  Do not freeze.
