Pourer - Iron Scatter

This small pourer is part of a wonderful collection produced by renowned Japanese potter Hirokazu Furutani at the historic Furuya kiln.

The Furuya kiln is based in in Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture, a region celebrated as one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, giving its pottery a heritage rooted in centuries of Japanese ceramic tradition.

The pourer features an iron scatter glaze which creates soft, organic variations in tone that highlight its hand-thrown form. The gentle vertical ridges are both aesthetically appealing and practical, providing the user with a comfortable hold.

Its compact size makes it practical for everyday use, whether for soy sauce, milk, cream or dressings.

The soft white Kohiki finish is achieved by layering white clay over iron-rich red Shigaraki clay and then firing it twice at low temperatures. Shigaraki clay is distinctive for its warm, reddish tones and slightly coarse texture, which contains natural feldspar and silica particles. When fired, these particles melt and fuse into the surface, giving a gentle sparkle and subtle variation to each piece.

Furutani’s work is valued by collectors of Japanese pottery however these pourers are designed to be used and enjoyed every day rather than being kept only for display.

  • 6cm diameter (7cm with spout)
  • 6cm height
  • Microwave safe but not dishwasher safe (see care instructions below)
  • Due to the handmade nature of this item, slight variations in size and finish are to be expected.

Care Instructions

  1. First use: Wash lightly with a mild detergent before use. As the pottery is absorbent, it may darken or show small spots when wet. This is normal and will disappear once completely dry and does not affect the quality.
  2. Sealing (optional): Boiling the piece in rice water before use can help reduce staining.
  3. Please note that the colour may look different until fully dry.
  4. Before serving oily or dark foods: Briefly soak the piece in clean water or hot water to help prevent staining.
  5. After use: Wash promptly, then dry thoroughly before storing. Putting pieces away while still damp may cause mould or odours.
  6. Microwave use: Safe for the microwave, but not suitable for the oven or over a direct flame.
  7. Dishwasher use: Not recommended, as it may damage the surface over time.
  8. Surfaces: Although the base has been treated, we recommend placing a mat or cloth underneath to protect delicate surfaces.
